This volume documents the development of German magical literature from the late 17th to mid-18th century, illustrating the techniques, spirit catalogues, and ritual methods that later consolidated into what is now called the Faustian Tradition.

The book presents three previously untranslated texts that share core themes while remaining distinct in structure and practice:

  • Nigromantisches Kunst-Buch — a Solomonic-attributed text detailing the conjuration and binding of spirits into a bottle, with methods comparable to the Ars Goetia.
  • Experimenter Buch — a practical manual describing the consecration of the Liber Spirituum (Book of Spirits), alongside instructions for ritual tools and pentacles.
  • Der Schlüssel von dem Zwange der Hölle — pseudo-epigraphically attributed to Johann Georg Faust, containing conjurations, spirit lists, and distinctive magical experiments.

The editor’s introduction examines the influence of alchemical literature on Faustian grimoires and the functional role of spirits within these traditions.

Two appendices expand on:

  • The identity and evolving symbolism of the plant Martagon of Solomon in magical texts.
  • The theory and practice of spirit bondage, imprisonment, and the Triangle of Art as they relate to the material presented.
