occult grimoire, spirit conjuration, German magic

The Hidden and True Pneumatology presents an obscure seventeenth-century German grimoire concerned with spirits, hidden treasure and the practical traditions of ceremonial magic. Translated, edited and annotated by Steve Savedow, this edition brings a previously little-known text into the English-language corpus of historical grimoire literature.

Known as Pneumatologia Occulta et Vera, the work explores the nature of spirits and methods of working with them, alongside material associated with figures and sources including Apollonius, Apuleius, Philostratus, Porphyry and St Cyprian. Among its most unusual features is a discourse attributed to the Olympic spirit Ophiel, recorded by the monk Albertus Bajer following its conjuration.

The grimoire draws together material connected with the Heptameron, Arbatel and Three Books of Occult Philosophy, presenting an extensive range of angels and demons associated with the elements, planets and zodiac. Its ritual material gives particular attention to the bell and crucifix, while the recurring theme of locating hidden treasure reflects a significant strand within the German magic tradition.

Of particular interest is the inclusion of a prayer to Hekate for use with treasure spirits, offering a striking example of how elements associated with ancient Greek magic could persist within later European grimoire traditions. For readers of occult grimoire literature, spirit conjuration and the history of German magic, this volume provides a valuable primary-text encounter with a fascinating and comparatively obscure magical tradition.

The edition includes a foreword by Dr Alexander Cummins, while the cover art and interior images have been redrawn by S. Aldarnay. Together, the historical text, editorial apparatus and distinctive visual presentation make The Hidden and True Pneumatology an appealing addition to a serious collection of ceremonial and esoteric literature.
