The Comte de Gabalis by Abbé Henri Montfaucon de Villars is a celebrated work of seventeenth-century esoteric literature, presenting a witty and provocative dialogue concerning elemental spirits, occult philosophy and the hidden inhabitants of the natural world.

First published in 1670, the work takes the form of conversations between a mysterious, all-knowing “Cabalistic” Count and a sceptical narrator. Through their exchanges, Villars introduces the doctrine of elemental beings, including Gnomes, Nymphs or Undines, Sylphs and Salamanders, while weaving together ideas concerning their relationships with humanity, ancient history and the invisible realms.

Whether intended as satire of contemporary credulity or as a deliberately humorous vehicle for esoteric teachings, The Comte de Gabalis occupies an unusual position in the history of Western esotericism. Its influence on later occult conceptions of elemental spirits, Paracelsian thought and the relationship between humanity and intermediary beings makes it an important work for students and collectors of magical literature.

This Black Letter Press edition is based upon the particularly curious 1700 expansion of Villars’ original text. Alongside the principal work are additional dialogues and the midnight “Address to the Gnomes”, including stories concerning a musician who married a Sylph and the legendary source of Nicolas Flamel’s wealth.

The 1700 edition was also the only illustrated edition, incorporating woodblocks derived from Alciato’s Emblemata of the 1540s. These unusual illustrations are reproduced as part of the historical atmosphere of the work.

The present volume preserves the flavour of the original through a lively English translation from 1714, itself influenced by Alexander Pope’s use of Villars’ themes in The Rape of the Lock. Joscelyn Godwin provides the introduction and translates the supplementary material in a compatible style.
