alchemy books, occult art, alchemical symbolism
The Alchymical Garden of Michael Foy by Sean Jefferson is a richly visionary exploration of alchemy, symbolism and the occult imagination. Created by British Symbolist artist Sean Jefferson, this unusual volume brings together paintings, drawings, seals and texts to create an immersive landscape where the ancient Royal Art of Alchemy encounters folklore, spiritualism and contemporary visionary art.
Inspired by the twenty-two emblematic images of Splendor Solis, Jefferson’s Garden unfolds through a strange and fertile world of fairies, poisonous plants, spirit presences, chthonic animals, Qabalistic pathways and Celtic survivals. At its centre is the enigmatic figure of Michael Foy, presented as an ancestral guide and hidden intelligence within the artist’s Great Work.
Rather than simply illustrating occult concepts, the work approaches the image itself as an operative vessel. Symbol, pigment, automatism and visionary perception become instruments through which the alchemical principles of solve et coagula are explored. The resulting landscape is distinctly British: beautiful, uncanny, humorous and haunted.
Drawing upon more than fifty years of Jefferson’s engagement with Symbolist art, Spiritualism, fairy faith, Golden Dawn colour symbolism, Jungian transformation and Surrealist automatism, the book occupies an intriguing position between occult art, alchemical symbolism and visionary practice.
With 29 full-page colour paintings accompanied by numerous black-and-white and colour line drawings and seals, The Alchymical Garden of Michael Foy is particularly suited to collectors of alchemy books and readers interested in the intersection of magical traditions and experimental art.
The Fine Hardcover Edition is strictly limited to 300 copies and will not be reprinted. Forewords by David Rankine and William Rose further situate the work within contemporary occult scholarship and practice.
