Liber Umbrarum, ceremonial magic, Holy Guardian Angel
Liber Umbrarum: Book of Shadows, also known as the Book of Spirits, presents a complete six-month system of magical practice centred upon the conjuration of elemental spirits, demons, planetary archangels and the Holy Guardian Angel. Originally published by Edizioni Rebis and edited by Pier Luca Pierini, this new Hadean Press edition has been translated into English by Steve Savedow and expanded with footnotes, appendices and a new foreword.
The work represents a distinctive synthesis of major texts from the Western grimoire tradition, drawing upon the Abramelin, the Key of Solomon and the Heptameron, alongside elements from the Arbatel, The Magus and the writings of Eliphas Levi. Rather than presenting these sources as isolated traditions, Liber Umbrarum brings their material together into a structured programme of practice designed around sustained magical development.
The six-month system begins with preparation of the Oratory and establishes daily prayers, clothing, diet and rules governing everyday life. The practitioner then progresses through three groups of two lunar cycles, culminating in a ritual of initiation or self-consecration. The work also provides instructions concerning the construction and preparation of the magical tools required for the rituals, including the magic circle, robe, altar, sword, pentacle and wand.
At the centre of the system is the pursuit of communion with the Holy Guardian Angel, placing Liber Umbrarum within the wider current of ceremonial magic concerned with spiritual transformation, divine contact and disciplined ritual practice. Its combination of angelic, planetary, elemental and demonic spirit work gives the book an unusually broad scope within the modern grimoire landscape.
Beautifully illustrated and rooted in an Italian synthesis of grimoire material, the volume also offers a reminder of the diverse magical groups and practices that exist beyond the better-known currents of twentieth-century occultism. For collectors and practitioners of ceremonial magic, Liber Umbrarum provides an intriguing contemporary presentation of historical grimoire traditions.
The hardcover edition is particularly suited to collectors, being strictly limited to 300 copies. It is bound in black buckram and stamped in gold on the cover and spine, while the volume contains full-colour illustrations by Pier Luca Pierini.
